Mandate The Committee on Empowerment of Women was constituted for the first time on 29th April, 1997 during the 11th Lok Sabha in pursuance of two identical resolutions moved in both the Houses of Parliament on 8th March, 1996 for improving the status of women
Membership The Committee consist of 30 Members; 20 nominated by the Speaker from amongst the Members of Lok Sabha and 10 nominated by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha from amongst the Members of the Rajya Sabha. The term of the Committee does not exceed one year and it is re-constituted year after year. The Members of the Committee are expected to work together for the empowerment of women cutting across the party affiliations. Composition by sex: 3 men (10%), 27 women (90%

Subjects dealt with The Committee has selected the following topics for detailed appraisal during its 2008-2009 term: 1. Working conditions and security provisions for women working in call centres 2. Credit facilities for women by public sector banks and NABARD 3. Social security schemes for working women in the organized and unorganized sectors 4. Working conditions of women in Prasar Bharati and other electronic/print media 5. Women victims of HIV/AIDS 6. Empowerment of women through Panchayati Raj Institutions 7. Women in paramilitary and armed forces 8. Violation of women's rights by so-called honour killings and other forms of violence. During its previous term (2207-2008), the Committee presented to the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha the following original reports: i) Working conditions of women in Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) ii) Medical facilities for women at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), hospitals and primary health centres iii) Insurance schemes of LIC for women
